Middelfart

Middelfart is a city on Funen, with just over 15,000 inhabitants. The town is located between the old and the new Lillebælt bridge. The town is named after the old name Melfar, which means "the waters one travels between" or "the middle crossing", referring to the fact that Middelfart was the town with the possibility of crossing to Jutland.

In Middelfart you can try something very special, Bridgewalking. With a guide, you can walk on the construction of the Old Lillebælt Bridge. This is a unique attraction and it is not possible anywhere else in Denmark. When you reach the highest point, you will be 60 metres up in the air and from here you will have a fantastic and different view of the area. Look at the water and the ships and feel the wind and the faint shaking of the bridge when a train passes underneath you.

When you visit Middelfart, it is of course a good idea to take a trip out on the water. You will find many different opportunities for exciting experiences on the water, for the whole family, around Middelfart. You can go on a whale safari, for example. The water around Lillebælt is one of the richest in the world and you can get up close to the little whale, the porpoise. Especially in summer there are many activities in and on the water, you can go diving, rent a boat, a kayak or canoe, there are also good opportunities to throw the line in the water and you can also get to kiss a crab and pet a fish.

You will also find many interesting museums in and around the city. If you like ceramic art, crafts and design, CLAY Keramikmuseum Danmark is worth a visit. The museum is self-owned and was founded in 1994. The museum houses ceramics from both Danish and international ceramic artists and also has collections from Poul Erik Madsen, Erik Veistrups and Royal Copenhagen.

If you have petrol in your blood, Strib Automobile Museum is the museum to light up any enthusiast's eyes. The museum is located on a large scenic lot and houses vintage cars and motorcycles that have been restored to perfection. You can admire Cadillacs, Rolls Royces, Buicks and vintage motorcycles, among others, and many of the vehicles also have a special history.

The cultural and historical Middelfart Museum has 2 permanent exhibitions. One of the permanent exhibitions tells about the history of the town and the region and about the porpoise hunters who have hunted porpoises in the waters around Middelfart since the 1800s. The other permanent exhibition is a cultural history exhibition about the former Middelfart Mental Hospital. The exhibition is located in the old patient building south of the town. The exhibition gives you an insight into the history of the mental hospital from its opening in 1888 onwards. You can hear about the types of treatment, the layout of the building and the everyday lives of patients and staff.

The pedestrian street in Middelfart runs parallel to the town's harbour front and has a particularly cosy atmosphere. If you fancy a shopping spree, you can stroll along the pedestrian street at your own pace and enjoy the wide selection of shops. Here you will find fashion, arts and crafts and food shops, as well as many good restaurants and cafés.

Middelfart is a city that offers something for everyone. So pack the car and take the whole family on a self-drive holiday for fun and exciting days in Middelfart.
