Viborg

Go on a self-drive holiday to historic Viborg

Pack your car and go on an adventure in Viborg, one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Located in Central Jutland on Hærvejen, Viborg is an amazing experience filled with a wide variety of attractions and sights in the most beautiful natural surroundings for all ages and all sizes. Here you can combine an active holiday with sightseeing, museum visits, restaurant visits and plenty of Danish history.

There's a fantastic selection for active families who want to try their hand on land or sea. The area around Viborg offers many beautiful rivers and lakes that are excellent for canoeing and kayaking. Gudenåen and Karup Å are known for the incredible nature experiences that follow in their wake as the boat cuts through the water. Experience the beautiful landscape from a different angle and enjoy the trip across the water with the whole family. There are different levels of difficulty, so children can also have a chance to try rowing. The Viborg lakes also offer various activities, where you can rent both rowing boats and pedal boats or take a boat trip with Margrete I and experience the royal city of Viborg from the lake. If you enjoy angling there are also great opportunities, but remember to get a fishing licence first and a Day Pass if required. If your bikes didn't make it on your car holiday, there are plenty of opportunities to hire bikes and try out the many cycling routes in and around Viborg. Hærvejen has its own cycle route and is Denmark's oldest road, which travellers have used for more than 1000years. In 1989, Hærvejen was marked as the first national cycling route, passing ancient burial mounds, Viking rune stones and medieval churches. There is also a route around Viborg as well as the beautiful ride around Hald Sø. But there are many more routes where you can set off on your bikes at your own pace and at the same time have some exciting and educational experiences.

Viborg itself is one of the great historic Danish cities, and Viborg Cathedral is a unique testament to the city's reputation since 1060, when it was given the status of a cathedral city. As it stands today, it dates from 1876 but both the style and the layout date back to the original church and the crypt is almost as old. Another gem hiding in Viborg is the Skovgaard Museum, which displays works by the Skovgaard family of artists with changing special exhibitions. The museum is located in the old town hall, a beautiful baroque building from 1728 and contains several works by P.C. Skovgaard, the well-known landscape painter, and the artist Joakim Skovgaard also decorated Viborg Cathedral. There is more art in Viborg Kunsthal which exhibits living art as well as events in connection with the exhibitions. Renowned Danish and international artists are exhibited here. The Art Hall can be visited by adults and children alike, read more about the exciting exhibitions on the museum's website.

Another very special experience is a visit to Viborg brewery. The city's microbrewery is located in the historic quarter and makes hand-brewed beer, completely from scratch. Take a tour of the brewhouse and hear the fascinating story of the brewer's daughter Rose. Next to the brewery is the historic Sortebrødre Church. Also visit the Viborg Playland for some fun for the kids. It's a huge indoor playground with lots of activities and fun games and entertainment for the whole family. There's a huge selection of rides including a bouncy castle, hockey, sandpit castle, playground, slot machines, air hockey, table tennis, slides, bouncy castle and much, much more.

Viborg is one of the many wonderful experiences that await the whole family on a self-drive holiday to Jutland, so pack your car with all the essentials and you'll be ready for all the exciting activities that await you in Central Jutland and Viborg.
