The Netherlands
The tulip country of the Netherlands invites you to a lovely self-drive holiday, whether you choose a short break, a summer holiday or a city break. The north of the Netherlands consists of the regions of Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen. Here you can experience the beautiful countryside of the flat north, which offers plenty of outdoor activities and exciting adventures on an active holiday for the whole family. You can discover the Wadden Sea and the West Frisian Islands, where seals are often spotted on the sandbanks. In Friesland you will find many interesting museums, including a coffee museum. You can also take the kids to Swimfun, a subtropical water park in the centre of Joure where the whole family can have fun. There are waterslides that wind through jungle landscapes, caves and waterfalls. There is a wave pool, toddler pool, Turkish steam baths, sauna and much more. In the Drenthe region you will find a lot of beautiful nature. There are numerous beautiful nature parks and you can also take a trip to the Wildlands Adventure Zoo located in the city, Emmen. The zoo in Emmen is Holland's largest and is a classic zoo with many animals, here you can see polar bears, elephants, hippos, camels and many other interesting animals. Groningen also has a lot to offer. You can visit the university city of the same name as the region, Groningen, and see the Martinikirken, Groninger Museum and enjoy the modern architecture the city is known for. You can also see the beautiful city from a completely different angle with a boat trip on the canals that run through the city.
The southernmost Netherlands consists of the 3 provinces, Zeeland, North Brabant and Limburg. These 3 provinces each have something unique that is definitely worth a visit. Zeeland with its many islands, North Brabant with its beautiful nature and Limburg with its hilly landscape and the river Meuse. The south of the Netherlands is generally a great place for culture and leisure activities. In the major cities of Eindhoven and Maastricht, there is an abundance of museums, galleries, cinemas, exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances. Of course, don't miss a visit to Gouda, the city of cheese, or a visit to Holland's second largest city, Rotterdam.
Amsterdam is the capital of diversity and here you can experience impressive museums, visit Anne Frank's house or visit the Heineken factory. The many canals provide the backdrop for a wonderful cycling city that welcomes everyone all year round.
Of course, you can't mention the Netherlands without mentioning tulips and if you go between late March and late May, you can experience the amazing tulip season. During this period, large parts of the Netherlands are covered in a stunningly colourful carpet of flowers. Take your family holiday to Holland, where you can enjoy an active holiday among beautiful flower fields, green forests, inland lakes and cosy canal towns.
A self-drive holiday in the Netherlands can be Easter holiday in Utrecht with the inner car-free city characterised by cosy streets with good shopping opportunities. Or take an autumn break in the port city of Rotterdam, where you can enjoy design and architecture. A holiday with children can head to the royal family's hometown of The Hague, where theme parks and proximity to the beach make it the perfect place for the whole family.
