Hungary
Its central location in Europe that makes Hungary the perfect holiday destination for the whole family. Hungary is a wonderful blend of old traditions and new developments. You can go on a self-drive holiday to Hungary and its many attractions or take the low-cost flights that fly from both Copenhagen and Billund to Budapest several times a week. A trip to Hungary can include a city break in Budapest, a wellness holiday in one of the country's spa towns or a family holiday on Lake Balaton.
Budapest has everything a big city should have, and it's cheap too. The city is Hungary's capital and is divided in two by the Danube River, which separates Buda from Pest. The city's many monuments bear witness to the eventful history that has marked Hungary and Budapest throughout the ages and it invites you to the perfect city break. Visit the Royal Palace, or Budavari Palota, a national symbol of Hungary, currently occupied by the President and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stunning Parliament in Budapest is almost unmissable, one of the most famous buildings in Hungary and also the country's largest building. The Chain Bridge is also worth a visit, it is one of Budapest's main sights and an important landmark for the city. If you have the kids with you on holiday, take a trip to the Budapest Zoo. Here you can meet elephants, polar bears, lions, giraffes, spiders, crocodiles, frogs and monkeys. Children can also get close to the more peaceful animals and pet them. If you want to treat yourself, visit one of Budapest's many thermal baths, which are steeped in tradition and have been visited for many years, such as the popular Széchényi Bath. Budapest also has many cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy good food and fine Hungarian wine, which is undergoing a huge development these years.
Two hours' drive, southwest of Budapest, you'll find Lake Balaton. Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central and Western Europe and, as it lies at the foot of a mountain range made up of extinct volcanoes, the area is protected from cold winds from the northern latitudes. This makes for mild summers and a Mediterranean-like climate, making it a lovely summer holiday destination. The lake covers almost 600 square kilometres and is one of Hungary's main tourist attractions. There are some really good beaches around the lake, but also many interesting sights and fantastic spas. On the shores of the lake, you can visit the town of Keszthely, which has very beautiful architecture, built in Gothic, Baroque and Transylvanian styles. In the city you will also find the Festetics Castle, in the Helikon Park, which is the largest green area in the city. In the small cosy town of Héviz, not far from Lake Balaton, you will find a unique atmosphere, fantastic nature experiences and cultural sights. The town is a famous spa town and is home to the world's largest thermal lake. The lake's healing powers have been known for centuries and people have lived here since the Stone Age.
There are also many outdoor activities to enjoy at Lake Balaton, besides swimming of course. You can rent bikes and follow the bike path all the way around the lake. You can also hire a boat and take a closer look at the different harbours or fish in the large lake, which is home to over 40 different species of fish.
