Glostrup

Fill the trunk and visit Glostrup, one of Copenhagen's western districts. The city now has a population of around 23,000, and while most districts west of Copenhagen are dominated by large apartment blocks, Glostrup is a more diverse district, with both residential areas and apartments, as well as the headquarters of a number of large Danish companies. Both by car and train, it is easy to get to the centre of Copenhagen - by train from Glostrup Station it takes just 16 minutes to reach Copenhagen Central Station.

Not much is known about Glostrup's early history, but the town seems to have been founded between the years 1000 to 1197, as the town's church was built in that period. The town was probably named after a founder called Glob and was probably built as an outpost by inhabitants who were tired of the crowded and poor conditions in Copenhagen and Roskilde.

Around 1900, development began in earnest. A railway station was built with connections to Copenhagen and the rest of Zealand, factories were built and small merchants set up shop, opening most of the shops that characterise a modern town. As a result, the population grew rapidly and the green spaces between Glostrup and Copenhagen became smaller and smaller. Today the towns have grown together and Glostrup is an integrated part of Copenhagen.

Although the city has grown considerably since its construction, it is still filled with large green areas such as the West Forest, which covers an area of 13 square kilometres and stretches all the way to Albertslund. At the northern end of the city you will find the scenic Ejby Mose, which flows into Harrestrup Å with varying hills and water bodies with exciting wildlife.

The district also offers cultural experiences. Close to Glostrup, one of Denmark's most successful football teams, Brøndby, plays its home matches. The club has achieved Danish club football's greatest international result with a semi-final place in the Uefa Cup, and has also won 10 Danish championships and 7 cup finals. Buses leave from the station every match day to the stadium and the authentic atmosphere in the stands.

If you'd rather spice up your holiday with a more fine cultural experience, visit Arken in Ishøj, about a 10-minute drive from Glostrup. The city has a large collection of modern art and a number of contemporary exhibitions featuring both big international names and new talents in the visual arts.

There is also the opportunity to shop. In Glostrup Shopping Centre, with its 55 shops, you can buy almost anything your heart desires and enjoy yourself in the centre's cafés and restaurants, as well as satisfy your hunger and thirst.

Among the restaurants located in the shopping centre, you will find Restaurant Siesta. It has a cosy, relaxed atmosphere and an exotic menu. The restaurant is dedicated to Brazilian cuisine with a real churrasco grill to achieve the famous Brazilian barbecue flavour.

Restaurant La Cocotte, located at Glostrup Parkhotel, offers a wonderful combination of Danish, French and Italian food traditions and a luxurious wine collection with more than 980 different kinds of wines in their wine cellar, bon appetit.

Take a break from everyday life and head to Copenhagen, it's easy by car and from Glostrup Station, but also discover Glostrup and the heartbeat of Vestegnens. Book today for a wonderful holiday at your own pace.
