Kolding

Cultural experiences and shopping on a self-drive holiday to Kolding

Kolding, located in Central Jutland, is a cosy town. In the city centre you will find beautiful old houses, fine pedestrian streets and a large selection of cafés and shops. But the city also offers museums, concerts and playgrounds for the little ones. On a self-drive holiday to Jutland, it's easy to visit this lovely town and the surrounding area.

If you're interested in Danish history, the old royal castle of Koldinghus - Jutland's last royal seat - is definitely worth a visit. The castle has been restored and rebuilt several times and even the old castle ruins are beautifully preserved. You can walk around on your own and immerse yourself in the castle's history or take a guided tour. The museum at Koldinghus also houses several interesting collections and exhibitions on the history of the castle. Also stop by the costume workshop where children can try on the beautiful Renaissance costumes. From the top of the tower you can enjoy the view over the city. An interesting place to spend an afternoon with the whole family.

The Landbo Museum Kolding is housed in the old Bread Farm and it provides the setting for a fine collection of old farming tools and household equipment. Here you can step back in time and get a really good insight into what life was like in the countryside. If the weather is good, it is possible to enjoy the food you have brought along outside.

Legeparken in Kolding is another great destination for a family holiday. There are lots of opportunities to play and have fun in the park. The children can play in the sandbox, swing so that their stomach tickles or climb on one of the beautiful climbing frames. The park is a nice place for a walk in the fresh air all year round.

The Trapholt Art Museum is located in beautiful surroundings overlooking Kolding Fjord and offers modern art and furniture design as well as special exhibitions with Danish and international artists. There are many experiences for both children and adults. Every day the museum organises art hunts where children can explore the various exhibitions. If you need a break from all the artistic impressions, you can relax and eat your packed lunch outside in the beautiful park or enjoy lunch in the museum's café.

On a self-drive holiday to Kolding, it's also easy to visit the town of Christiansfeld, which was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2015. The town is planned and built so that the church is in the centre, surrounded by the town's other main houses and buildings as well as gardens and green areas. The Christiansfeld Centre organises guided tours where you can learn more about the history of the town and the Brethren congregation. You can also explore the cosy streets and admire the uniformly beautiful yellow buildings with their characteristic red tiled roofs. If you stop by one of the bakeries in town, you can still taste the famous and delicious honey cakes.

Kolding and the surrounding area is a lovely place to go on a mini break. The city offers history, shopping and fun for the whole family. So pack your car and get going.
