Greater Copenhagen
Greater Copenhagen, a cultural and geographical region in Denmark and Southern Sweden, is a treasure trove of history and attractions. This region is steeped in historical significance, with its roots dating back to the Viking Age. The region's largest city, Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, is renowned for its royal palaces, historic landmarks, and picturesque canals. The city's historic district, Indre By, is home to the 17th-century Rosenborg Castle and the iconic Little Mermaid statue—a tribute to the famous fairytale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The Nyhavn harbor, with its colorful 17th and early 18th-century townhouses, is another must-visit area in the city.
A stone's throw away from Copenhagen is the city of Helsingør, home to Kronborg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Roskilde, another significant city in the region, is known for its UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral, where 39 Danish monarchs are buried, and the Viking Ship Museum, which displays authentic Viking ships. The island of Møn, famed for its white cliffs, and Bornholm, known for its medieval round churches, are other notable sub-regions in Greater Copenhagen, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue.
Greater Copenhagen also extends into Southern Sweden, where the cities of Malmö and Lund hold a wealth of attractions. Malmö, a vibrant city with a rich history, is characterized by its blend of old and new architecture, with the Turning Torso skyscraper standing as a testament to its modernity. Lund, one of Sweden's oldest cities, boasts a medieval charm. Its 12th-century Lund Cathedral and the open-air museum Kulturen, which showcases Swedish life from the Middle Ages to the present day, are must-visits. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and diverse landscapes, Greater Copenhagen offers a myriad of attractions that cater to a wide range of interests.
