Hobro

Go on a driving holiday to the small port town of Hobro on Mariager Fjord.

The city of Hobro lies at the bottom of Mariager Fjord and is situated in a hilly terrain with high hills in both the northern and southern parts of the city. This gives the town a unique character that dates back hundreds of years.

Hobro is probably best known as the town where racing driver Tom Kristensen was born and raised, then it is known for the Viking fortress Fyrkat, which is a few km. west of the city. Fyrkat is a ring fortress dating back to 980. If you are interested in history, it is definitely worth a visit and you can learn more about the purposes Fyrkat served in its time, probably including military purposes. There are also burial mounds near the town. Between Kongehøjen and the village of Katbjerg, there are two burial mounds, Ormhøj and Jordhøj.

If you are interested in art, Hobro has something to offer there too. At Kunstetagerne, which is part of Bies Gård, a historic building in the city centre, there are various exhibitions and admission is free. So if you're in the area and the weather isn't so inviting, a trip past the library and art exhibition would be an obvious day out. Here you can see art by some of Denmark's most renowned artists, and enjoy the architecture

You can also take a trip to Hobro Museum, where you can see and learn about the history of the town and the surrounding area. The museum is housed in the town's oldest house from 1821 and forms the framework for the local cultural history museum. Here the story of Hobro through the ages is told with the help of objects, photos, maps and texts, and how the town has developed from the hunter stone age right up to today's industrial society.

There are many places in the city where you can enjoy the atmosphere, a meal, a drink and shopping. So don't hold back and enjoy the North Jutland hospitality, and the exciting mix of city and nature.

There are many other historical sights to see in the town, including the Viking-era rune stone erected by the Swedish Viking Thore in honour of his companion Charlemagne. There is a similar rune stone at Ås in Västergötlad. The rune stone used to stand in Hobro Cemetery, but is now located by the town's library.

If nature is your thing, Hobro is a place with many possibilities. There are many large trails that are well maintained and easy to walk on. Get a nice nature experience in the Østerskoven, where you can have a look over Mariager Fjord. Some of the oldest oak trees here are hundreds of years old, and forest cattle graze among the old trees, which help to make the forest light and airy. This composition allows many species of birds and butterflies to live there. It is also possible to take a trip with the paddle steamer Svanen and experience Mariager Fjord and Hobro from the water. This can be combined with a train ride on the Mariager-Handest Veteran Railway. So you get to experience one of the most beautiful places in Denmark, both from the land and from the fjord side.

If you're taking the kids on a driving holiday and the weather permits, you could head to the new climbing park, Uncle Tom's Climbing Forest, where you can play Tarzan for a day and swing from branch to branch. Here you can reach so high and look so far down that your stomach starts to churn and your legs start to shake. This provides a unique view of the Baltic forest and gives you a rare close contact with nature and the green beech trees. Here you can also enjoy your lunch in the former restaurant's forest pavilion.

Or how about a visit to the World Map, where quality time and intimacy are the order of the day. Whether you're holidaying in North, Central, West or East Jutland, the World Map is the perfect place to visit, thanks to its central location. The world map is spread out like a large atlas on the shores of Lake Klejtrup and here you can experience the whole world in miniature with lakes, rivers, mountains and flags. There are also jumping pillows, petting animals and much more in the park for the whole family and it's the perfect picnic spot.

Go on a mini holiday with Risskov in southeastern North Jutland and have a fantastic experience, with lots of fun and nature.
