Sorø

Fancy a holiday or weekend break that's steeped in history, culture and class, but also boasts magnificent scenery and rural tranquillity? Then take a self-drive holiday to Sorø.

You can find this fantastic place on Mid Zealand not far from the E20 motorway, so there is easy access for you who like a holiday in your own car.

When you arrive in Sorø city and stroll into the cobbled square. This is where you should stop and enjoy the view and take in this historic place.

The square is surrounded by beautiful yellow half-timbered houses and in the middle stands a beautiful statue of Frederik II

The place is incredibly beautiful, and this is only enhanced if you should be lucky enough to visit at Christmas time.

If you come to Sorø in summer, a trip to Sorø Lake at Skjolden is recommended.

Here at the northern end of the lake is a nice little beach. The water is shallow, making it the perfect place to take a break if you're going on holiday with young children.

When the kids have had enough of water and sun, you can head to Parnas Nature and Activity Park. Here you'll find Sorø's public playground Huleby, a place made for fun games. The "city" consists of seven unique caves. Designed by 5th and 6th grade children from Sorø's municipal school.

Is one or more of your family bitten by a mad fisherman? Yes, remember to pack the car with fishing gear.

There are three fishing lakes in Sorø. You can choose between Pedersborg Lake, Tuel Lake, and of course Sorø Lake. The lakes have a bit of everything, and if you are good you should be able to catch fish up to 20 kilos.

Sorø is most famous for its sand eel fishing in Lake Tuel. There are said to be so many fish that they practically jump into the boat.

And if you want a boat, you can rent one here.

If you're taking a stroll down the old streets, you might want to stop by Søgade 17.

Here you will find Hauch's Physical Cabinet. This is a unique collection from the history of physics, which was donated to Sorø Academy in 1827.

If you like good food, you should stop by Støvlet Katrines Hus.

This place is a gastronomic experience that can compete with the greats on an international level.

And like everything else here in Sorø, culture and history are linked to experience. You'll dine in the house that housed King Christian VII's famous and infamous mistress, Støvlet Katrine. However, she was later expelled from the country as it was thought she had too much influence on the weak and perhaps insane King Christian D.VII, who however later ended up giving power to his house physician Struense.

The historical element is of course only a bonus. The real reason to visit is their wide selection of dishes. These include their ribeye with pepper sauce, corn, beech hats and potatoes with onions and herbs - and of course their famous sumptuous steak.

As we mentioned before, Sorø is a city that exudes history, culture and class. And once you delve into this, you'll understand why.

Sorø Akademi was formerly a monastery. This monastery was one of the richest monasteries and had great respect and prestige in the Middle Ages. For this reason, several kings were buried at Sorø Abbey Church. Here we can mention:

Christoffer 2.

,

Valdemar Atterdag

and

Oluf 2.

besides Absalon and Ludvig Holberg. (Ludvig Holberg's great grounds in Sorø, and many of his greatest works were written with inspiration from this very area.)

Later, in 1586, the monastery was converted into Sorø's scholarly school for the boys of the bourgeoisie and nobility. It was this school that has now become Sorø Academy.

So all in all. If you want the perfect self-drive holiday that offers culture, history and stunning scenery, Sorø is the place for you.
