Beautiful castles, museums and lovely beaches on a self-drive holiday to North Zealand

North Zealand offers many exciting cultural and natural experiences all year round. On a self-drive holiday you can experience beautiful castles, art museums and a beautiful landscape with green forests, large lakes and lovely beaches. It's the perfect destination for a self-drive holiday.

Visit some of Zealand's most beautiful coastlines and best beaches, which invite you to wonderful bathing trips and pleasant walks in the sunset. Or take a trip to Dyrehaven or the coast along the Øresund and enjoy the beautiful view across the strait to Sweden. This part of Denmark offers a wide range of holiday experiences.

On a self-drive holiday to North Zealand, it's a good idea to visit the town of Elsinore with its cosy streets and old houses. One of the main attractions is the fairytale Renaissance castle of Kronborg, beautifully situated overlooking the Øresund. The castle is open to visitors and offers lots of fun for the whole family. There are several guided tours around the castle. Inside you can see the beautiful dance hall while outside you can experience the old cannons. Don't forget to visit the legendary hero Holger Danske, who sleeps in the casemates under the castle.

The M/S Maritime Museum is another great destination on a family holiday to North Zealand. Set in beautiful surroundings in Elsinore, the museum tells the story of Denmark as a seafaring nation through the ages. It's child-friendly, so kids can get up close to history and learn a lot about seafaring and trade. They can also go on exciting adventures with the Dream Ship - and help the captain navigate!

If you are interested in modern art, the Louisiana art museum in Humlebæk is definitely worth a visit. The popular museum is located in scenic surroundings overlooking the Øresund and houses a large art collection as well as changing special exhibitions. Take a walk in the park surrounding Louisiana and enjoy the many works of art that seem at one with the surroundings. There is also a wide range of activities and events and plenty of space for children to play.

The charming town of Hillerød offers plenty of culture, history and shopping. In fact, the city has a bit of everything; great places to eat, a lovely pedestrian street with many shops and the adventurous Frederiksborg Castle. The castle was built by Christian IV in the early 1600s and is set in the middle of the castle lake, surrounded by the beautiful castle garden. Since 1878, Frederiksborg Palace has also been the setting for the National History Museum, which tells 500 years of Danish history.

On your holiday you can also visit one or more of the cosy towns on the north coast. Gilleleje, Tisvilde and Liseleje offer cosy cafés, small shops and beaches as far as the eye can see. On the lovely beaches you can relax, build sandcastles and take a dip in the waves. In Frederiksværk you can hop aboard the turbo boat M/S Frederikke and take a boat trip on Lake Arres, while the idyllic town of Hundested offers a cosy harbour, small shops and beautiful scenery.

On a self-drive holiday to North Zealand you can combine exciting cultural experiences with beautiful nature activities. So pack your car and take the whole family on an unforgettable driving holiday. It's easy to book a cosy mini holiday or a delicious spa stay for your trip at Risskov.
