In North Jutland lies the Limfjord, which winds all the way from Thisted in Thy to Halspå. The surrounding countryside and cosy towns make it one of Denmark's most beautiful places to visit. The islands of Egholm, Mors and Livø, all located in the middle of the fjord, are all worth a visit, while towns like Gjøl, Nibe, or Hvalpsund are also recommended for a self-drive holiday.
The Limfjord stretches over an area of 1700 square metres, and separates Thy and Vendsyssel from the rest of Jutland. It is possible to cross the fjord at Aalborg via the Limfjord tunnel or the Limfjord bridge, while cyclists can use the Kulturbroen cycle and footbridge.
There are plenty of activities and excursions along the Limfjord if you want a nice holiday with the family. Among the best known are Jesperhus Flower Park on Mors, Dueholm Monastery in Nykøbing Mors, the Limfjord Museum in Løgstør or Aalborg Zoo in Aalborg.
You can also go hunting for mussels, oysters and other shellfish in the area. The Limfjord is known for having some of the best shellfish in the world. This is also the case on Mors, where you can experience the annual Shellfish Festival in June and the Oyster and Clam Premiere in October.
The wings of history can also be felt all year round in the fjord, which used to be an important area for small boat sailing. Every year in week 47, for example, the largest wooden ship race in the Nordic countries is held, Limfjorden Rundt, where 65 old wooden ships gather to compete for the best places.
