Varberg Fortress is one of the great tourist attractions and definitely worth a visit. Experience the fortress's 700-year history up close among cannonballs and dungeons. There are also many family activities at the museum, and in summer there are guided tours that show how life was at the fortress.
Varberg Fortress was built by the Danish Duke Jakob Nielsen in the late 13th century. The fortress therefore bears witness to the close ties that existed between Denmark and Sweden even then. In the early 1600s, the Danish king, Christian IV, rebuilt the fortress into a more modern defence system.
