Islands

The South Funen Archipelago is the shallow waters south of Funen, home to more than 55 islands, islets and islets. A fine ferry system enables transport between the inhabited islands, where some of the islanders live mainly from farming, some fishing or commuting to jobs on the "mainland".

A good way to experience the South Funen archipelago is by hiking along the Øhavsstien, which at 220 km is one of Denmark's longest hiking routes. The Øhavsstien is a marked trail system from Faldsled in the west to Langeland in the east and Ærø in the south.

Take a delightful trip to Denmark's unique archipelago of Ertholmene and visit Christian V's fascinating fortress from 1684. The fortifications are extremely well preserved and largely untouched, being listed. On Christiansø you will find yourself far away from the traffic and noise, in the middle of Denmark's only archipelago. Experience the island's stunning scenery, with eider ducks and silver gulls galore. It is possible throughout the year to get to Christiansø from Gudhjem.

Go on an island holiday or mini break on Bornholm and discover the beautiful Helligdomsklipper, north of Rø. The cliffs are the amazing result of thousands of years of weathering and stand today as cracked and torn, with deep caves and unusual shapes. The area was once a place of pilgrimage, with a sacred spring at the base of the coastal cliff. Also visit Bornholm's Art Museum, which has large collections of paintings, handicrafts and sculptures with links to Bornholm. Special exhibitions of various kinds are also regularly held.

During your stay, a trip to the island of Sylt (south of Rømø) is a must. On the northern tip is the town of List and on the southern tip is Hörnum. Along the island there are beautiful white beaches, lovely dunes and interesting towns. The shape of the island has often changed over the years and is still changing. This of course over a long period of time and the island's current shape has only been around for about 400 years. Sylt used to be part of Denmark. Today there are about 12,000 inhabitants on Sylt. Sylt has 40 km of fine sandy beach and there are many exciting opportunities for activities, including swimming, beach gymnastics and more. In winter it is possible to visit a beach sauna. Go on holiday in your own car and discover the pearls of Denmark on a self-drive holiday. Take a lovely trip to Bogø, an island of about 14 km² located in the Storstrøm belt, right between Falster, Møn and the mainland of Zealand. You can either drive or take a nice little ferry ride. Bogø is a former maritime island and the old state captain's villas, the navigation school and the skipper's houses underline Bogø's past as a very important island. In addition to interesting past monuments, the island offers beautiful and lush scenery, a small lovely town and a charming harbour. Take the ferry from Frederikshavn to the lovely Danish island, Læsø. The 118 km² island offers glassworks, dunes, churches and extremely beautiful scenery. Rømø is created by converging sands which make the Rømø beaches utterly amazing. The island is a part of the Wadden Sea National Park and offers beautiful nature with a rich opportunity for long walks. Hamburger Hallig is a beautiful former Wadden Sea island located on the west coast of southern Schleswig. The area has been landlocked since 1860, via a dam, and is today an extremely popular destination for thousands of tourists who come to enjoy the stunning Wadden Sea scenery. In the information centre Amsinck-Haus, you can find information on Wadden Sea walks and sailing trips in the area, as well as rent bicycles. You can book a hotel at Risskov.

Föhr is a North Frisian island located off Southern Schleswig. The beautiful island has an area of about 80 km² and is also called 'the green island'. On your tours around Föhr, you will encounter medieval churches, including St. Johannes Church in Niblum, which is the largest of a total of three. There are also two museums on the island; the cultural history Frisermuseum in Vyk and the art museum Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum.

Rügen, Germany's largest island, also known as the German Riviera. The island is a popular tourist destination, mainly because of its picturesque fishing villages, beautiful scenery and miles of sandy beaches on its south-eastern shore. Discover white chalk cliffs and beautiful lakes and beech forests. Spend an active day cycling, hiking, fishing or relaxing in the fresh waters of the Baltic Sea.

On the island you will of course find many cosy restaurants where you can enjoy the local specialities of the island. Also visit Binz, the largest spa town on Rügen. Along the town's picturesque pedestrian street you can visit some of the shops found in the town. Along the long promenade you will find spas and guesthouses.

Another wonderful destination is Usedom. This relatively large island, from a German point of view, offers wonderful scenery, beaches and a wealth of wildlife. There are also good opportunities for hunting and fishing. The Historisch-Technisches Information Centre in Peenemünde tells the story of German technical warfare during the Second World War. Most of Usedom belongs to Germany, while the south-eastern part is Polish.

Agersø is a beautiful Danish island located between Storebælt and Smålandsfarvandet and there are about 180 lucky inhabitants who can enjoy the very scenic island from close range. Take the ferry from Stignæs, which is about 10 km southwest of Skælskør, to get to the island.

The best way to experience Agersø is to go on safari with the 'Tractor Bus', pulled by the pride of the island, a John Deere 2130 tractor from 1977. The trip runs from south to north and gives a good impression of the unspoilt nature and the beautiful and wild nature areas completely surrounded by water and with a fantastic bird life. See the old cannon battery from the 1812 British wars or perhaps find a fossil on the shore, it just takes a little patience. If a fishing trip would be interesting, Agersø is also a good place to start. Turbot, plaice, sea trout, salmon and many more delicious fish species can be found in the waters around Agersø. Agersø Sund, which separates the island with Zealand, is the deepest water in Denmark and is also called the 'Danish Philippine Grave'. Don't forget to visit the cosy little town of Agersø, and if you have time, take a trip down to the small marina and experience the great atmosphere.

From Esbjerg, it takes just 12 minutes by Fanø ferry to cross over to Fanø.

Take a trip to beautiful Öland, which is accessible by car, bus and boat. The Öland Bridge is 6 km long and offers a magnificent coastal landscape that can be enjoyed on the way across. Öland has everything you could wish for - especially in summer. There are limestone areas with protected orchids, forests, wonderful cycle paths, white beaches, animal park, ecopark, geopark, Viking graves and nature reserves. You'll also find a range of restaurants, cafés and nightclubs.

Ronneby skærgård offers a picturesque coastal escape with a variety of activities. Explore the stunning archipelago by boat, enjoying the scenic views and serene waters. Visit Brunnsparken, a beautifully landscaped park perfect for a relaxing stroll. Discover the local history at Ronneby Cultural Center and enjoy the exhibitions. For nature enthusiasts, the Blekinge Trail offers excellent hiking opportunities through lush forests and along the coast. Don’t miss a trip to Tjärö, an idyllic island with charming red cottages and nature trails.

"The Blue Virgin" an island and national park in the middle of Kalmar's beautiful archipelago. The Blue Virgin rises more than 80 metres above the water. Granite Island is a nature reserve and is uninhabited, but there is a stone labyrinth worth visiting. In the past, the Blue Virgin was believed to be the place where witches met on Holy Thursday. There are regular boat trips to the Blue Virgin from Oskarshamn.

Sweden has a lot to offer and Bohuslän in particular has a unique nature and a magnificent archipelago that is not difficult to be captivated by. Find a cheap weekend break for the whole family and discover the archipelago with its bare granite cliffs and small fishing villages that line the coast like pearls on a string. Visit Käringön in the far North Sea, for example. The island is only accessible by ferry as it is completely car-free.

Take a day trip to Smögen and stroll along the long Smögen Bridge at the old fishing port.

Have a cheap mini holiday and visit Denmark's northernmost islands Hirsholmene. The beautiful small archipelago is located in the Kattegat off Frederikshavn and includes the islands Hirsholm, Græsholm, Kølpen, Deget and Tyvholm. The Stenrevsøerne, which have been protected since 1938, are home to a fantastic wealth of natural and animal life and are thus a genuine nature reserve in the Kattegat. You can get to Hirsholmene by boat from the harbour in Frederikshavn, from Østerby Harbour on Læsø or from Vestersø. The tours are supported by the Danish Nature Agency.

The small island of Femø is located in the Småland waters north of Lolland, but belongs to the municipality of Lolland. The two largest towns are Nørreby and Sønderby. From the west side of the island it is possible to see the pylons of the Storebælt bridge, which is about 50 km away, and from the northern tip of the island it is possible to see the old Storstrøms bridge, which is about 30 km away.

Femø offers everything that is good for the soul and the body. Peace and quiet, but most importantly the opportunity to recharge your batteries. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the island by bike and there are lovely beaches with good swimming opportunities. There is also fishing, paddle boarding and surfing. Nature makes it an obvious choice to bring your camera, a unique chance to fill up your home archives with the idyllic scenes just waiting to be "shot" - so don't forget your camera.

Enjoy a walk along Pigmosevej down to the harbour, where there are refreshments and a good and cosy atmosphere among guests and sailors.
