Budapest

Take a driving holiday in Europe, specifically Hungary, and discover the stunning capital, Budapest, at your own pace. As you know, it's about two cities, Buda and Pest, separated by the Danube River but named Budapest since 1873. Close to 1.8 million people live in the city, which covers an area of just over 520 square kilometres.

The city's many architectural masterpieces also bear witness to the heyday that Budapest had, and indeed still has. Beautiful boulevards, splendid castles and not least spas are something that is just part of Budapest. A great way to get a little sightseeing in under your belt is by taking Line 2, and enjoying the ride around Budapest on the tram.

Budapest is home to over 200 museums, so why not start with the Budapest City Museum and get immersed in Budapest's fascinating history. The National Gallery has exhibitions of Hungarian artists and the State Museum of Art houses great international masterpieces, including the largest collection of El Greco outside Spain.

There are so many things to see and do in Budapest and that certainly goes for the kids too. Budapest Zoo is always a winner and the Botanical Gardens also hide exciting visual experiences. On the outskirts of Budapest is Aquincum, which was an old Roman military base and it is said that it was here that Marcus Aurelius spelled out parts of his famous work "Meditations" or Thoughts "to himself".

Remember, it's cheap to shop but it's also cheap to eat and drink. So enjoy the many Hungarian specialities and fill up your bags with some of the many delicacies Budapest has to offer.

The famous Christmas market is also a great experience for the whole family, and there's certainly no shortage of colour, scents or shopping opportunities. But whatever the season, Budapest is an experience. Find a cheap hotel stay for the whole family and explore beautiful Budapest.
