At the foot of the Pilis Mountains, the small artists' town of Szentendre is an artistic haven, filled with small art shops and various collectives of artists, who also work in groups according to the artistic common denominator and across different art genres.

The historic atmosphere of the town has also acted as a draw and Szentendre is also home to one of Hungary's largest outdoor museums, the Skanzen, which is a representation of the old farming community and is a folk museum, similar to the Open Air Museum.

The city also has a number of good restaurants and cafés, and if you fancy a bit of shopping, there should be some great opportunities to pick up some genuine Hungarian art. There are several cycle paths around the city, and the flat terrain along the Danube is perfect for a ride on two wheels.

The small town of Visegrád lies right on the banks of the Danube and from the town there is a very beautiful view of the river's undulating path through the countryside.

The city was once a royal fortress and the royal palace, which dates back to the 15th century, has been recently renovated and is quite an impressive sight. The King Matthias Museum has an exhibition housing many archaeological finds from the area.

Szent István Basilica is located right in the heart of Budapest in the beautiful Szent István tér. The basilica was completed in 1905 after taking 54 years to build, partly because the dome collapsed in 1868 and construction had to start again. The basilica is named after Szent István, Saint Stephen, who was the first king of Hungary. Together with the Parliament, it is the tallest building in Budapest, symbolising that the earthly and the spiritual must stand equally strong, and it is therefore still not possible to erect buildings taller than these two of Budapest's architectural masterpieces.

The stunning Budapest Parliament is almost unmissable and is probably one of the most famous buildings in Hungary. It took nineteen years to build and construction began in 1885. The country's Crown Jewels are stored in the famous Cupola Room, flanked by statues of the Hungarian kings. All the rooms in Parliament are decorated in gold and adorned with red velvet carpets.

The synagogue in Dohany Utca is the second largest synagogue in the world. Built in the 18th century, it gives an idea of the cultural rights of rich Jews at that time. The double domes are decorated with kramic foliage and inside there are more than 3,000 seats in the synagogue, and a bit oddly there is also both an organ and a pulpit, which one usually associates with the Christian faith. In that sense, the synagogue is quite special, also because parts of the building face east.

There is also a cemetery and a Holocaust memorial depicting a weeping willow tree with the names of those who did not survive that terrible time.

On the outskirts of Budapest you can find the Tropicarium, which is the largest saltwater aquarium in Central Europe.
