Orvieto had its heyday in the Middle Ages and many popes sought shelter in the city. In the centre of the city you will find one of Italy's largest and most beautiful cathedrals. The townspeople paid for the building of the church for almost 300 years before it was completed around 1600, and when you take a closer look at the facade and the colourful paintings in the church, you'll understand why. Beneath the city lies a spectacular experience - a visit to Citta Sotterranea. You can go down into the excavated passageway system, which for hundreds of years was used as a cellar for storing food and the city's fine wines. You can also visit the city's round tower, which houses the well of St Patricius. Follow a spiral staircase 62 metres down to the bottom of the well, which was consecrated by the Pope in 1529.
