Saarn monastery was built in 1214, and functioned until the 19th century as a Catholic monastery for nuns. The monastery has avoided war and destruction for more than 800 years, probably because it was secluded and unassuming. In more recent times, however, decay seriously threatened the monastery's various buildings, and a thorough renovation was therefore carried out in 1979-1989. The museum offers tours where you can hear more about its history.
The monastery complex is divided into three areas where there are cultural events, church work and housing for the elderly. Saarn monastery is the center of many exciting events, e.g. children's theatre, exhibitions and a musical morning break. The monastery regularly holds concerts with classical music, you can find the program on the monastery's website.
There is also a beautiful herb garden and several events linked to the garden are offered. You can learn more about the herb garden in Sunday meetings about the monastery garden. Green Mondays are also held, where forgotten medicinal plants are presented, and Saturday workshops with many "wild" recipes for the kitchen and medicine cabinet are offered.
