Sparkling Christmas stalls with beautifully decorated roofs, twinkling lights and an atmospheric programme of events. The Christmas market in Stuttgart is a great place to visit during a mini break or weekend break at Christmas.
Enjoy the 25-day Christmas atmosphere in Baden-Württemberg's beautiful state capital, Stuttgart. Located in the heart of the city centre, the sumptuous and traditional row of stalls stretches from the square in front of the 'Neues Schloss' with the 'Königsbau' passage on one side and the city's large squares, 'Karlsplatz' and 'Schillerplatz' on the other - and all the way past the 'Alten Schloss' and 'Stiftsstrasse' to the large 'Marktplatz' in front of the city's beautiful town hall.
The Christmas market in Stuttgart is not only one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, it is also one of the oldest. The market is first mentioned in official sources in 1692, but it is believed to have had roots even further back in time. And the stalls still today offer a wide range of traditional flea market goods, but the variety of the range in the 300 or so stalls has over time reached a different level than you would probably have experienced just 100 years ago. You'll find a wide range of wooden toys, decorations and wreaths, crafts, jewellery, sweets and culinary delicacies from around the world.
More than 3.5 million people visit the beautiful state capital every year in search of the special Christmas atmosphere it offers.
The Christmas Market is accompanied by an extensive programme of events spread throughout the city. There are daily live concerts, a large adventure land for children with nostalgic merry-go-rounds, a real steam engine from the old days and plenty of activities inviting participation, such as a children's bakery, candle workshop and antique market on Karlsplatz square, all of which help to make Stuttgart's Christmas Market days something special.
