Ystad

In 1244, Ystad is mentioned for the first time in literature, when King Erik visited the place, and the town's St. Mary's Church dates from this time. Some time later, in 1267, the monastery of Gråbrød was built by Franciscan monks, and Ystad became known during the Hanseatic period.

In Ystad you can also visit Scandinavia's oldest half-timbered house, Pilgrändshuset, located on the street of the same name.

If you are interested in cultural history, Ystad has a lot to offer. Ystad is an old town, founded in the 12th century as a fishing village where the Vassa River flows into the Baltic Sea. It is only natural, therefore, that herring fishing made up the majority of the population's diet at that time.

Ystad's large harbour has always played an important role for the city. Today you can travel by ferry to Bornholm, Germany and Poland from Ystad. In Skåne, you can also visit the area's many beautiful castles. Also visit Sweden's southernmost point, Smygehus.
