About 80 km northwest of Kassel lies Wevelsburg, which certainly deserves a detour if the history behind Nazism is of particular interest. Wevelsburg was the place where Heinrich Himmler's famous SS corps was ideologically indoctrinated, trained and initiated into the many secret SS rituals. It was also here that the 'Totenkopf rings' of already dead SS men were to be gathered in the cellar, symbolising their eternal presence as a permanent part of SS culture and Nazi Germany for all eternity. The castle runs a permanent exhibition called "Ideologie und terror der SS", a unique exhibition that deals with the visions of the SS Corps ideology while giving visitors a unique insight into the culture behind Nazism and the megalomania that eventually brought the Third Reich to its knees.
