On Marienplatz you will find "Die Mariensäule", a column about 14 metres high that was erected in 1638 as a symbol of the end of the Swedish takeover of the city, during the Thirty Years War. On top of the statue was placed a gold statue of the Virgin Mary, which had previously occupied its place in the "Vor Frue" church.
