Siegestor

The Munich Arc de Triomphe is certainly an eye-catcher, especially when darkness falls and the Arc de Triomphe is illuminated. The beautiful arch is 21 metres high and 24 metres wide and is located between Ludwig Maximilian University and Ohmstraße.

It was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and designed by Friedrich von Gärtner. The Arc de Triomphe was completed in 1852 and was intended as a monument to the heroism of the Bavarian army.

The Arc de Triomphe was badly damaged during the 2. World War II, but was rebuilt again. Today it is a monument to peace, reminding us all of peace, for as the back of the triumphal arch says: "Dem Sieg geweiht, vom Krieg zerstört, zum Frieden mahnend", "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, with wishes for peace".
