Rondane National Park was established in 1962 and is Norway's first national park. The park covers a huge area of almost 1,000 square kilometres and also includes the counties of Oppland and Hedmark. The wilderness has been part of the national park for thousands of years.
Many Norwegian artists and writers have drawn inspiration from Rondane's beautiful landscape and nature. These include Sohlberg, who painted the mountains in blue light. The work was later recognised as one of Norway's national paintings, Winter Night in Rondane. Today, the place where he painted the beautiful painting has been made into a lookout point.
The National Park has ten mountain peaks over 2,000 metres high in the Rondane massif, with the Rondane Castle being the highest at 2,178 metres. Explore the national park on foot or by bike or on horseback. Enjoy simple day hikes or take the trail from hut to hut on the many marked trails. You can paddle on the rivers and the bravest can challenge the water masses in the rafting boats.
