The official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg was built in the 16th century. Located in the center of the city's historic quarter, the palace is a striking example of Flemish Renaissance style. The palace stands out in particular with its golden, grandiose architecture with sumptuous stone carvings. The building's facade is broken by several pointed towers, windows and ornate balconies.
In the palace's early history, from 1572 to 1795, it served as a town hall, and in 1817 the building was used as the seat of government. During the Second World War's German occupation, large parts of the interior were destroyed, but later restored under Grand Duchess Charlotte. Today, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess use the palace as a residence for official events.
You can get a tour of the inside of the palace in the summer, Wednesdays excepted. Here you can see several beautifully furnished halls and rooms from different historical periods. There is also a changing of the guard outside the palace, and the public is welcome. You can possibly combine the visit with a trip to the Luxembourg City Hall and the National Museum of History and Art.
