One of Söderhamn's most famous landmarks is the Oscarsborg observation tower, which was inaugurated in 1985 and offers a stunning view of the city.
The tower was built on the initiative of the town engineer, Gustaf Hultqvist, who was chairman of the Söderhamn Singing Society, and it was he who designed the building. In order to afford the tower, money was raised through two 'people's festivals' in 1893 and 1894, and they were so successful that they decided to build the tower in brick and plaster instead of wood, as had first been the idea.
The 23-metre tower is free to visit.
