Njardarheimr

It is a long time since the first Vikings settled in Gudvange, in the beautiful and wild Nærøyfjord. Today, a new Viking village has grown up next to the ferry port in Gudvangen between Flåm and Voss on the E16. The place is called Njardarheim and here you will have the opportunity to travel back in time about 1000 years, all the way back to the Viking Age and experience what life was like in a real Viking village.

Go archery and learn how the Vikings cast axes. When the Vikings weren't cultivating the land, they spent their time, among other things, holding bidding wars between the strongest men. Otherwise it was horse riding, racing and knife throwing. The Vikings also played chess, and there was a story about the Norwegian gods Thor and Odin one Saturday evening. Poetry was also read and the flute, drum, lute and harp were played.

Take the whole family on this Viking experience in the wild and enjoy a few hours like real Vikings. Children under 4 get in free with an adult. You can also hear the exciting stories from the Viking Age told by the Viking Village's very own chief. Also stop by Heidrun in Njardarheimr, where you can enjoy Viking fish, soup with coarse bread, home-made sausages with cabbage, bread with salmon and many other delicacies from the Viking Age.

When porridge was served in Viking times, it was a festive occasion, while those who were better off could buy more exotic spices than just salt and chives. Honey was used instead of sugar, and no one ate potatoes at that time. Food was cooked by the fire in the longhouses and then it was all put on the table at once. The Vikings were mostly self-sufficient farmers who ate meat and fish - both salted and smoked. When you visited the Vikings, the food was sour milk, beer or strong, home-brewed mead on really festive occasions.

It is possible to park your car just outside Njardarheimr, and there are also 2 charging stations for electric cars. From Gudvangen it is easy to get to and from Njardarheimr. You can also enjoy a walk along the Nærøyfjorden and smell the basil and thyme that grow wild in the area. It is said that they date back to Viking times, and it should be quite true!
