Måbødalen is a narrow but very beautiful valley stretching from Eidfjord to Hardangervidda. In earlier times there were several roads through Måbødalen, but in the 1780s a staircase with 1300 stone steps was built to facilitate the journey back and forth for the villagers.
There are old houses, several stone quarries, irrigation systems, bays, paths, roads and bridges, all bearing witness to the hard life that preceded it in a very harsh terrain.
The outdoor museum Måbødalen Kulturmuseum has put up 21 information signs at the bottom of the valley, telling about the area's history and development over the last century.
