On the Passo Tonale, the natural border between Italy and Austria, World War II was fought, a war also referred to as the "White War". If you go on a self-drive holiday in the area between Adamello and Brenta, you can still find the old fortresses that were built in the mountains. It is possible to visit some of the old fortresses, such as Forte di Corno d'Aola, Forte Zaccarana or Tonale and Forte Strino. Both Temú and Vermiglio have museums dedicated to the White War.
