Gateshead Millennium Bridge is the world's first and only bascule bridge. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and constructed by Gifford, the award-winning structure attracts visitors from near and far. The bridge crosses the River Tyne and links the two cities of Newcastle and Gateshead. The bridge is only accessible by bike or on foot, so you have plenty of opportunity to take a closer look at the stunning structure. The bridge can be tilted 40 degrees, allowing smaller ships and boats to pass underneath the structure. It only takes about 4.5 minutes to tip the bridge, depending on the wind speed. This manoeuvre has earned the bridge the nickname "Blinking Eye Bridge".
