Take one of the many cheap car holidays in Europe organised by Risskov and visit the city of Esztergom. The city was the capital of Hungary between the 10th and 13th centuries and is actually one of the oldest cities in the whole of Hungary. Settlements have been found dating back to the end of the Ice Age, some 20,000 years ago. Esztergom is located northwest of Budapest and houses a medieval village hidden away in the city itself.
The city is especially known for the Esztergom Basilica, which is also the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary. The magnificent building was consecrated in 1856 and the beautiful Bakócz Chapel is built in Renaissance style with red marble. Here visitors also have the opportunity to see the many religious gold treasures as well as the fabric collection, considered one of the most important in the world.
The winding streets of the town hide historically beautiful buildings, as well as a lot of small shops with inviting goods, and on the outskirts of the town are the old fortifications and the great wall that helped protect the townspeople.
