Donaueschingen is a beautiful town located directly at the point where the Danube River begins its almost 3,000 km journey through as many as ten European countries, eventually flowing into the Black Sea. The town has existed since the Middle Ages and is first mentioned as 'Donaueschingen' in the year 889. For many years it functioned as a princely city.
The castle in the centre of the town was built as a princely residence in the 16th century. Today Donaueschingen is a lively cultural town with plenty of exciting opportunities. Take a guided tour of the castle, discover the Donauquelle spring in the castle park, visit the town's historic brewery or visit one of the interesting museums. The town also hosts the annual music festival, Donaueschinger Musiktage, which is held in October, as well as really good opportunities for skiing in winter and both golf and hiking and cycling in the other seasons of the year. In other words, Donaueschingen is the perfect destination for a holiday near Bad Dürrheim, Villingen-Schwenningen or anywhere else in the Black Forest.
