Visit the beautiful German city of Ulm at Christmas time and get into the Christmas spirit. Beautifully situated on the Danube River in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Ulm hosts a lavish Christmas market every year in November during the month of December. The Christmas market tradition goes back more than a century, and has been spreading Christmas cheer among locals and visitors alike ever since. The Christmas market in Ulm is extremely popular and attracts thousands of visitors from Switzerland, Austria and Italy every year. For Danes, the Christmas market in Ulm is not so well known yet - by its very nature it is often overshadowed by the larger Christmas markets in northern Germany, which are closer by - but more and more visitors from the Nordic countries are starting to travel further south, and have gradually discovered Ulm's very special charm.

The Christmas market starts at the beautiful Münsterplatz in front of the city's cathedral, which has the world's tallest church tower, and spreads out from there like a circle in the water. The whole area is bursting with Christmas lights, decorations and more than 130 lovingly decorated stalls where you'll find everything from classic crafts and culinary specialities to modern Christmas decorations and exciting gift ideas. Helping to set the mood are the more than 18,000 tiny lights that adorn the majestic Christmas tree in the main square.

In addition to the many cosy stalls, there are plenty of exciting activities and entertainment on offer around the market. There's a fairytale forest, merry-go-rounds and romantic tents, and next to the big Christmas tree, you'll find, for example, "Die lebende Krippe" (the living crib) with various live animals. All this in a wonderful and sensual setting of Christmas music, singing and the lovely smells of roasted almonds, Glühwein, sausages and cinnamon. The market's proximity to the pedestrian street also gives you the perfect opportunity to do some more traditional shopping, with plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants to explore.
