Experience the world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, one of the world's oldest Christmas markets. The market dates back to the mid-16th century and today is simply the epitome of a true German Christmas market.

"You men and women who were once children are children again." These words, which translate as 'Ladies and gentlemen - you were once children and today you are again', are part of the traditional speech given at the official opening of Nuremberg's annual Christmas market. The speech is given in the main square in front of the beautiful Frauenkirche, by 'Das Christkind' - the baby Jesus, who is a carefully chosen young girl wearing a white and gold dress. And these words are really not far from the truth, because Nuremberg's Christmas market really knows how to bring out the same sweet Christmas joy that most adults only remember from their childhood.

The Christmas market opens with the traditional Christkind speech and then the market is open every day until the closing date. Let yourself be seduced by the smell of gingerbread, Glühwein and the local speciality, Nuremberg bratwurst, as you walk around the almost 200 wooden stalls, beautifully decorated with candles and lamps and red and white fabric. In the stalls you will find a large and varied selection of Christmas decorations, crafts, toys, clothing, household items and much, much more. The magical feeling that flows through visitors to Nuremberg's Christmas market is made no less stunning by the lavish backdrop of historic buildings that surround it.

In addition to the main market, Nuremberg offers a number of other attractions, events and activities during the month of December. For example, every year there is a Christmas market specifically for children, with a large cultural programme of more than 120 events, ranging from storytelling to theatre. Adults may also find it interesting to visit the city's 'Twin Market', a market created in cooperation with Nuremberg's 13 partner cities.
