The Wolfsschanze
Hitler's headquarters in Gierloz, known as the Wolf's Lair, is one of the most sinister places in the region, but it attracts many tourists because of its historical significance. The fortress consists of 80 buildings, constructed between 1940 and 1942, 50 of which are bunkers. The headquarters had its own electricity generator, railway station and a landing strip. In the central part of the complex there were residences for top Nazis, as well as a casino and a cinema. The whole area was camouflaged and protected by barbed wire and minefields. During the German retreat in 1945, the fortress was blown up. Its ruins are open to visitors.
