Synagogue in Dohany Utca

The synagogue in Dohany Utca is the second largest synagogue in the world. Built in the 18th century, it gives an idea of the cultural rights of rich Jews at that time. The double domes are decorated with kramic foliage and inside there are more than 3,000 seats in the synagogue, and a bit oddly there is also both an organ and a pulpit, which one usually associates with the Christian faith. In that sense, the synagogue is quite special, also because parts of the building face east.

The synagogue was under 2. During World War II it was part of the Jewish ghetto in Budapest and there were about 70,000 people living in the ghetto in and around the synagogue. There is also a cemetery and a Holocaust memorial depicting a weeping willow tree with the names of those who did not survive that terrible time.
