Svendborg

Svendborg is located in the south of Funen and is a maritime city with about 28,000 inhabitants. Svendborg's history goes back more than 750 years and the historic town centre invites you to stroll through the narrow streets and cosy courtyards surrounded by half-timbered houses. Svendborg is the second largest city on Funen, after Odense, and here you will find a good selection of shops, restaurants and cafés.

Svendborg is located on the Svendborg Sound near the Svendborg Sound Bridge, which connects Funen with the island of Tåsinge. From Svendborg Harbour you can take the ferry to Ærø, Drejø, Skarø, Hjortø or Birkholm if you want to visit the small islands in the South Funen Archipelago.

Svendborg is, due to its good location by the sea, a renowned shipping town, and there are still today several shipping companies in the city. In fact, Denmark's largest company originated in Svendborg when Captain Peter Mærsk Møller and his son Arnold Peter Møller bought a second-hand steamship in 1904 and formed A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg. In 2003, the company was renamed A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S, which is known throughout most of the world.
