Visit the Stegeholm Castle Ruin

Stegeholm was a medieval former fortress near Slottsholmen in Västervik, on the small island of the same name, on the shallow waters of Gamlebyviken Bay. It was specifically designed to protect this estuary in the Baltic Sea. Stegeholm was founded in 1370 by Albrecht II. Duke of Mecklenburg, who had it built to secure the waterway to old Västervik, today's Gamleby at the end of the bay.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and had to be rebuilt several times after being destroyed, so that it was even converted into a luxurious castle in the 17th century. But this too was destroyed again and - unlike the town - was not completely rebuilt. Rather, the inhabitants of Västervik even received permission to use the ruins as a quarry for building their houses.

Thus, today you can experience the historical remains of the medieval castle.

Open-air concerts are often held in the summer.
