Skt. St. Olaf's Church
There is a church in Balestrand, a copy of a stave church from 1897. It is under the authority of the Bishop of Gibraltar and belongs to the Church of England, even today. The story goes that the church was erected in memory of the British mountaineer Margaret Sophia Green, who took the surname Kvikne when she married a fellow from Balestrand. Britten never settled in the Lutheran church and probably longed for home. Her last wish was to see an Anglican church built, and it stands to this day. The church bears witness to the long history of visitors to Balestrand. In other words, it was not just Emperor Wilhelm II who found a place of belonging here at Sognefjorden.
