Lake Starnberg

The beautiful lake has always been a popular breathing space for Munich's busy residents. Starnberger See is also the fifth largest freshwater lake in Germany and there are a number of small towns along its shores, with Berg in particular recommended for a visit. Tours depart from Starnberger onto the lake, where visitors can see for themselves the many historic castles and beautiful scenery that are part of the attraction of the place. It was also in one of the castles that Ludwig II was held as a prisoner after he was declared insane.
