Isola San Giulio

This small, beautiful island is just 400 metres from the shore of Lake Orta. According to a myth, the island was ravaged by snakes and monsters until one day in 390, San Giulio crossed the lake and they disappeared. He soon founded a church, turning the island into an evangelistic centre for the whole area.

The beautiful church stands today as the island's main attraction. From the church you are led all the way around the island on the narrow path, "the path of silence and meditation". The island's other buildings, now private residences, are former priests' residences. The oldest of them is Villa Tallone, which hosts various classical concerts every year.

On a car holiday in northern Italy, the island is a must - and it's easy to get to Isola San Giulio with the public boat service.
