Allinge

Allinge destination image

Explore adorable Allinge and book a hotel through Risskov. The town is a small market town of 1,500 inhabitants built around its magnificent 19th century harbour with small yachts and surrounded by picturesque Bornholm cliffs. Until a few decades ago, the town was a traditional fishing village, but today it is a popular tourist destination with visitors from all over Europe and especially Scandinavia.

In addition to the beautiful harbour, the town offers pretty cobbled streets and old wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as good restaurants, smokehouses and local craftsmen scattered throughout most of the town.

From Allinge you can take a short trip to Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest medieval fortress built in the 13th century. The beautiful castle ruin is constructed on a cliff 75 metres above sea level, and from here there is a breathtaking view of the Baltic Sea. At the centre of the fortress is the castle itself and surrounding the castle is a 750-metre stone rampart. Hammershus has over time become a Danish national icon and has been portrayed in many paintings, the most famous being Anton Eduard Kieldrup's painting from 1849, which is on display at the Bornholm Art Museum. When the Swedish army tried to retake Bornholm, they began their campaign by capturing Hammershus, but were quickly beaten back by a rebellion among the island's inhabitants. All in all, Allinge is an area with exciting stories, for example Peter the Great and the Russian army stayed in the town for a few days during his wars against Sweden in the early 1700s.

In summer, you can sail from Allinge on a day trip to Christiansø, Denmark's easternmost bastion and still officially owned by the Danish military. The island has 83 permanent inhabitants, but is visited by more than 50,000 tourists every year. The island is visited mainly for its old fortifications, beautiful harbour and traditional granite houses.

The biggest event in Allinge this year is Folkemødet, which has been held since 2011. It brings together politicians, opinion leaders and interest groups from all over the country to debate politics, society and culture with the many visitors. Another major event in the town is the Allinge Jazz Festival, held in week 28, which has been held in the town since the 1990s with bands from all over Europe.
