Rudkøbing

Rudkøbing destination image

Do you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the day, really get away? Then Langeland is the perfect place for you.

Here you can go on a driving holiday to endless rows of fields, old mills and wild horses. The perfect place for those who love the freedom of driving around in their own car and experiencing the magical places Denmark has to offer.

And Rudkøbing is the perfect base for your adventures.

The town is located on the other side of the Langelands Bridge, only 16 km southeast of Svendborg.

It's a cosy harbour town where you can always hear the roar of the sea and the cries of the seagulls. The air is fresh and salty, and you can't help but feel alive as you walk along the quay and watch the many fishing boats set out after the day's catch.

In the rear window you can enjoy the view of the Langelands Bridge, which strikes like a mythical creature from the Danish past.

Walk away from the harbour towards the city centre and you'll discover a little Danish gem with cobbled streets and old yellow houses that could have been taken straight out of a fairytale. Follow the small, cosy streets and you will come to the pleasant town centre, better known as Gåsetorvet. Here you can take a break while admiring the Old Pharmacy, where the world-famous physicist H.C Ørsted grew up. He lived from 1777 to 1851 and is most famous for his discovery of electromagnetism. In 1920, on the centenary of his discovery, a statue of him was erected in the town square.

When you take the car to drive through the unique landscape of Langeland, you can visit the Cold War Museum at the Langeland Fort in Bagenkop. Here you can learn all about this very special time full of espionage and secret missions. Here you can see part of the original Berlin Wall from Potsdamer Platz, where it stood until 1089.

The Langeland Fort itself was built between 1952 and 1953, but was converted into a museum in 1997.

However, it has kept its four 150 mm cannons, which you can get up close to. You can also board the Danish minesweeper Askø and take a closer look at a Soviet MiG-23 aircraft.

If you've had enough of the cold war, you can also take the car and drive out to see some of the many castles and estates to be found on Langeland.

Among these is Tranekær Castle, owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family. This castle is the oldest inhabited house in Denmark.

Their family came to the castle in 1659, and in 1672 the family was elevated to the title of Count, after which it formed the County of Langelad.

In summer, guided tours of the castle are available until the end of July.

So come along and gain insight into the incredible history of this ancient lineage and get a feel for Denmark's past.

As you drive between Langeland's many castles on winding country roads between fields, woods and moors, you'll discover that this place has more wonders than you might think. You might be lucky enough to see the amazing wild horses that still live freely in the island's lush countryside.

And if you're into movies, you might also come across several places that seem relatable. Langland has played a role in quite a few Danish films. These include: A Second Chance, The Revenge, Camping, and many more.

So don't deprive yourself or your children of a special experience right here in Denmark. Take the whole family, pack the car and come on the perfect self-drive holiday.

Langeland is waiting.
