Flensburg destination image

Go on a self-drive holiday to Flensburg and discover Germany's gateway to Scandinavia.

Flensburg is perfectly located just south of the Danish-German border. It couldn't be easier to fill your trunk and go on an adventure in historic surroundings. For many years Flensburg was Danish and therefore a unique Danish-German culture prevails in the city.

The old town offers plenty of charm and a stroll through the streets takes you past small, colourful fishermen's houses, old cosy squares and characteristic sunny yellow captains' and merchants' backyards. Here you'll find charm as far as the eye can see. Enjoy the many great shopping opportunities in the city's pedestrian zone and don't cheat yourself of a little detour to Rote Strasse. This quaint little pedestrian street was once part of the High Road and still oozes history. The cobblestones and cosy old farmhouses form the backdrop to this pleasant area, where speciality shops sit side by side with cosy cafés and restaurants. In the street you will also find the Braasch wine and rum shop, which has an interesting rum museum in its courtyard. At Christmas time, mulled wine is served in the courtyards and the whole area has a wonderful Christmas atmosphere.

In general, the city's small pedestrian streets contain a wealth of beautiful buildings and hidden gems. You can easily explore the city on your own and, for example, walk past the city's main church, St. Nikolai, with its characteristic tower, or St. Mary's Church, where you'll find the stalls where butchers and bakers sold their wares as far back as the 1500s. However, it is also recommended to go on one of the many guided city walks, where you will spice up your visit with extra interesting anecdotes.

Flensburg is idyllically situated at Flensburg Fjord and the city's harbour has played a naturally important role in its history. Today, enjoying a walk in the historic harbour is a must on your visit to the city. Here you will be greeted by historic sailing, motor and steam ships at the harbour quay, and there are also interesting museums that tell about the great role of shipping in Flensburg's history. It's a great experience to go on a fjord cruise and enjoy the view of the beautiful coastline from the water.

Its location by the fjord also means that there is a wide range of scenic experiences in and around the city. The area naturally invites water sports activities, but don't kid yourself about taking a break from city life and exploring the surrounding countryside. The kilometre-long Baltic Sea coast attracts with steep coasts, untouched forests and beautiful beaches. If you're a nature lover, you'll want to venture into this inviting hilly landscape, where there are plenty of opportunities for both cycling and walking.

If the whole family is coming to Flensburg, visit the exciting science centre Phäenomenta, where children can unleash their imaginations and experiment with fun games. Young and old alike will be taken on a journey of discovery through the world of technology, and the 170 or so experiments await you with hours of fun and learning.

Holidays can also offer adventures near Flensburg. When you holiday in your own car, you experience the surroundings in a completely different way and at your own pace. Within a short drive from Flensburg you can experience several idyllic towns, impressive castles such as Glücksburg Castle and Gottorp Castle or exciting museums such as the living museum town of Angel Egnsmuseum in Undevad. The area is also full of mills, churches and other interesting historical sights.

So pack your car and head to Flensburg for the perfect self-drive holiday, full of charm, joie de vivre and lots of great experiences.
