Nature and parks in Denmark

Råbjerg Mile is one of Denmark's most remarkable natural attractions, located near Skagen in North Jutland. This impressive migrating coastal sand dune spans approximately 1 square kilometre and moves up to 15 metres annually due to strong winds. Visitors can experience the vast, almost desert-like landscape, complete with panoramic views of the surrounding area. Discover Stevns Klint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautiful and unique area is where scientists discovered why dinosaurs and half the world's animal species were wiped out 66 million years ago when Earth was hit by an asteroid. The steep coastal cliff is about 17 km long and offers a 21 km hiking trail, known as the "Trampestien", which passes through Boesdal limestone quarry.

Go on a car holiday in Denmark and drive yourself to Enebærodde on North-East Funen and spend some lovely hours in the company of the idyllic Funen nature. The oodi itself is car-free, so park the car and enjoy a lovely walk out on the small point of land in Odense Fjord. From the small lighthouse at the very end of the odden, it is only about 400 metres across to Lodshuse on the other side. On your walk you will pass both deciduous and spruce forests and Funen's largest heath with heather and not least the juniper bushes after which the place is named. Risskov has a large selection of weekend breaks.

Visit the protected nature area Frøbjerg Bavnehøj, which has the highest point on Funen at 131 metres. From here you get a magnificent view. In the area you will also find that there are many different trails to walk and if you follow the longest trail, you will pass several memorials of national historic importance - including, not least, a beautiful memorial grove for the victims of the occupation, established in 1954.

Drive to Fyns Hoved, the most northeastern point of Funen, directly south of Samsø. The area is one of Denmark's most beautiful and there are several unique natural areas to explore. The wildlife here is also incredibly rich and includes the relatively rare butterfly, Ocellated Yellow Warbler, beach toads, snakes and vipers. Fyns Hoved is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.

Go on a summer holiday on Funen and take a trip to the southwest Funen peninsula, Helnæs, which consists of two very different areas. Experience the contrast between the flat landscape of Helnæs Made and the domed terrain of the Bobaks. Here you are guaranteed some lovely walks, wrapped in Funen idyll. Helnæs Lighthouse in the south-western corner of the peninsula dates from 1901 and rises 28 metres into the air.

This manor landscape in Middelfart dates back to the 13th century and here you can explore the varied and beautiful nature with open plains, wet meadows, steep slopes and old beech forests. The large population of crown and fallow deer can be seen on the tour around the Hindsgavl peninsula. Let your senses lead you around the fantastic medicine gardens in Tranekær on Langeland. The gardens are an extensive collection of shrubs, trees and plants that have been used for medicinal purposes. Many of the plants are still used today. The beautiful gardens are divided into different themes, such as respiratory and circulatory, nervous and musculoskeletal and sensory. Go on a mini-break or weekend break on Langeland and spend a lovely day in the fantastic medicinal gardens, where your eyes and nose will be particularly delighted.

Funen is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. North of Faaborg, for example, lies Svanninge Bakker. Park your car and head out into this stunningly beautiful and hilly landscape, created during the Ice Age. In addition to being a geological area of interest, the area also contains an extremely rich plant and animal life, and it is recommended to bring binoculars.

The Bird reserve Ølsemagle Revle in Køge is perfect for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts. The reserve is extremely rich in particular wading birds. There is also a lookout tower from which visitors can get a better view.

North of Stevnsfortet is Stevns Fyr, built 1877-78. There is also an old one in the area dating back to 1816, but it is no longer active. In the former lighthouse keeper's house you can see an exhibition about the two lighthouses and the nature along Stevns Klint. The area around Stevns Lighthouse was part of the Copenhagen Air Defence during the Cold War. Go up to the 27-metre high new lighthouse and enjoy the magnificent view.

Come and visit Vesterhavegaarden Winery, southeast of Næstved. Here you can be shown around the farm's extensive vineyard and apple orchard and hear about the wine's creation, after which you come down to the farm's cozy wine cellar, where you get an insight into the process. You'll also get to taste the stuff, of course. The winery also has a farm shop where you can buy exciting organic products.

Go on a summer holiday on Bornholm with the whole family and experience the impressive birds of prey show in Rønne. Surrounded by lakes, streams and cliffs, you can watch owls, eagles, vultures and falcons as they fly freely around you. There is a falconry show, daily flying displays and an indoor flying hall in case of bad weather. After the show you can ask the falconer questions and have a look in the small shop. There are many options for a family holiday in Denmark. Ekkodalen is part of Bornholm's longest crevice valley and is an approximately 12 km long hiking and nature paradise. The crevasses originated more than 1,400 million years ago. There are small streams and lakes, springs and an almost 200-year-old protected forest. At H.C. Ørsted's spring, just west of the car park at Ekkodalhuset, the echo is thought to be particularly strong. Take a trip to Ekkodalen and judge for yourself. Bornholm is a lovely place for a summer holiday with children.

Hammerknuden offers some of the best hiking you can get on the beautiful island, with rounded cliffs, heather, rocky valleys and forests as far as the eye can see. On your way around the 182-hectare circular cliff, you may come across Solomon's Chapel, among others. The chapel is located right on the coast and dates back to the Middle Ages.

On eastern Bornholm you can take a lovely walk in the Paradise Hills, a rugged landscape of cliffs, crevice valleys and stunningly beautiful natural forest. Plant life is extremely rich at the bottom of the valleys and the area offers several beautiful lakes and old bogs. It is also in the paradise hills that you will find Bornholm's largest boulders. The rock stone is currently the only one of Bornholm's three rock stones that can actually rock.

Rø Plantage is a beautiful state forest, and offers hiking in the stunning Bornholm nature. The almost 600 hectare plantation was established around 1866-75 and consists mainly of beautiful spruce, pine, larch and birch trees. Apart from Almindingen, Rø Plantage is the island's largest forest area. In the area are the two crevice valleys, Søndre- and Nordre Borgedal, with the stunningly beautiful Borgedalsø.

Experience the Gudenå, which with its length of 158 km, is called Denmark's longest river. The idyllic river stretches through East and Central Jutland and offers excellent opportunities for angling or a leisurely canoe or kayak trip. In addition, you can experience some very special walks in the particularly flora and fauna-rich nature surrounding the Gudenå.
