The city is also sometimes referred to as the textile city or "knallestaden" after the "knallarna", the former itinerant merchants of the area, who are said to be the forerunners of mail order companies. The town has a long history and was founded by Gustav II Adolf in 1621 and there is a statue of him in the main square. There are also several museums to visit and in the city you will also find exciting works of art such as Jim Dine's bronze sculpture Walking to Borås.
