The city of Pilsen or Plzen is located in western Bohemia and is famous for its beer, Pilsner Urquell. Visit the brewery and its museum or take a guided tour of the brewery. There are many fine buildings in town, such as St Bartholomew's Cathedral, which adorns the town centre and is one of the Czech Republic's tallest buildings.
Visit the exciting Velká Synagogue, Europe's second largest synagogue. Today, the synagogue does not have many religious users, but is instead used for large concerts and photo exhibitions. Another one of the city's landmarks is the Renaissance town hall. If you want a relaxing day or more, there are many options for wellness treatments in Plzen and the nearby spa towns.
Beneath the city is a mysterious network of underground passageways dating back to the Middle Ages. Take a guided tour of the underground labyrinth and find out how the passageways have been used over the centuries. The temperature here is 6 degrees all year round. From Plzen you can go on a day trip to Prague and it is also possible to ski in the nearby Primda Pfraumberg ski area.
