Småland in Sweden is not far from Denmark. The beautiful landscape offers vast forests, shining lakes and characteristic red wooden houses as well as a wealth of sights. Experience the large forests, which invite you to take long walks while the peaceful lakes are perfect for fishing and canoeing.
In the northern part of Småland is the area's largest city, Jönköping, which has a beautiful location down to Sweden's second largest lake, Vättern. If you're taking the kids to Sweden, a trip north to Astrid Lindgren's town of Vimmerby is an obvious choice. Here you'll find an adventure park where children can meet both Pippi and Ronja the Robber's Daughter. In the area around Vimmerby, you can also visit Bulderby and Astrid Lindgren's childhood home.
Large parts of Småland are known for their long-standing glass production and the area is therefore called the Glass Kingdom. In Glass Kingdo you can watch hand-blown glass being made and buy beautiful glass creations. Visit one of Sweden's oldest towns, Kalmar, where you'll find one of the area's great sights, Kalmar Castle, the best-preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic countries.
