Beautiful yellow houses, great artwork and great scenery on a self-drive holiday to Skagen
Skagen, located in Northern Jutland, is a charming town with a very special atmosphere. The town is especially known for its beautiful yellow Skagen houses with red roofs, cosy streets, art museums with renowned works and beautiful nature.
Skagen and its surroundings offer a wide range of attractions, cultural experiences and nature activities and attract many visitors all year round. It is an ideal destination for the perfect self-drive holiday.
The magnificent scenery around Skagen in North Jutland is always an experience. The area offers many wonderful nature experiences and beautiful beaches. At the beach you can take walks along the water, build castles in the fine sand or play in the dunes. In summer it is also the ideal place for a swim. There are plenty of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, canoeing and running in the beautiful surroundings. Here the whole family can have fun while getting close to nature.
Grenen, Denmark's northernmost point, is an obvious destination on a family holiday to Skagen. In summer, you can take a trip on the Sandormen, right out to Grenen, and experience the waves and roar of the sea. It is here that the two seas, Skagerrak and Kattegat, meet and you can stand with 'a leg in each sea'. The area around Grenen is also rich in birdlife and you may be lucky enough to see many different species.
At Råbjerg Mile you can experience the wild nature and Denmark's largest hiking area. The mile consists of sand and covers a large area. It is 35-40 metres high and moves about 15 metres in a north-easterly direction every year. After a walk, you can enjoy the view from the top of the mile, which is absolutely stunning.
On a self-drive holiday to Skagen, it is also a good idea to visit the old, sandy parish church of Sct. Laurentius Church. Today, however, the church is probably best known as 'The Church of the Forsaken'. You can still see the old church tower in the dunes, but otherwise there is not much left of the church. Next to the church there is also a playground where children can have fun.
There are also many galleries and museums in Northern Jutland. If art is your interest, both Anchers Hus and Drachmanns Hus are definitely worth a visit. Both homes are beautifully preserved and showcase paintings and works of art.
Skagens Museum is also very popular. It has an extensive exhibition of works and showcases some of the best known paintings by Skagen painters. The museum is very child-friendly, so children can get up close to the art. Among other things, there is a painting school for children during some school holidays and a children's room with activities all year round. If you need a break amidst all the artistic impressions, you can enjoy refreshments in the cosy café.
On a cosy mini break or longer summer holiday to Skagen, you can experience one of Jutland's most idyllic towns. There is something for the whole family. So pack your car and get going.
