Oslo

Oslo, the capital of Norway, is a lovely city, perfect for a city break, it is still growing and today houses around 700,000 inhabitants.

There are exciting museums, art exhibitions and restaurants, and plenty of space to enjoy the wonderful and lively atmosphere of this small 'big' capital. Oslo is also a versatile city, and there is always something to see or do in the various districts. It is also not far between interesting sights, all within walking distance or easily accessible by bike or public transport. Oslo is a very bike-friendly city, and it certainly pays to rent a bike and experience the city up close. You might want to start by visiting the 700-year-old fortress, Akershus, which sits on a hill with incredible views. Then take the trip to Oslo's Opera House, which also faces the fjord, just on the other side. Discover Vigelandsparken and Karl Johans Gate, where you'll find a myriad of restaurants and cafés.

Oslo is also a city full of music, and there is a lot of live music playing around the various clubs and pubs.

The small metropolis has its charm in winter as well as in summer, and there are always good surprises waiting in Oslo.

The Munch Museum

Go on a summer or winter holiday to Oslo, and find the holiday at Risskov. Visit the exciting Munch Museum, home to some of Edvard Munch's most famous paintings. It is also in Oslo that the world famous painting "The Scream" is exhibited and the Munch Museum clearly also has the largest collection in the world of Edvard Munch's art. A visit to the famous museum will also reveal a lot of interesting information about the painter both as a person and as a pioneer of expressionism as an art form. Opera House

The Oslo Opera House has recently become one of Norway's national landmarks. The building was completed in 2007 with a budget of NOK 4.4 trillion. The building belongs to the National Theatre and Opera and is the largest national cultural building built in Norway since the 1300s. Take a walk up to the roof of the building and enjoy the beautiful view over the city and the water.

Akershus Castle and Fortress

You can also visit Akershus Castle and Fortress. The fortress is strategically located at the entrance to Oslo Harbour and has survived several sieges over the years. The fortress dates back to the Middle Ages, but was rebuilt by Christian IV, and Queen Margrethe I lived in the castle for the first part of her life. In the castle you can see the eerie dungeon, which was also used as a prison during the Second World War.

Vigelandsparken

Vigelandsparken in Oslo is definitely worth a visit, as it is also the largest park in the centre of Oslo. The park has always been a popular area where the city's citizens could entertain themselves with various outdoor activities or just enjoying the good weather surrounded by green and beautiful nature. The park is one of the most magnificent sights in the Norwegian capital and the whole park is also dedicated to the works of the famous sculptor and artist Gustav Vigeland. Vigeland Park contains a total of 214 sculptures, made of bronze and granite. There are also 13 wrought iron gates. Gustav Vigeland himself modelled all the sculptures in full size, while the carving in granite and the casting in bronze were mainly done by his students and skilled craftsmen.

The River Museum - Fetsund lenser

The forest has always been important for Norway's exports, and wood was exported as early as the 14th century. Until the 1950s, timber was transported by river, but today more modern means of transport are used. So why not experience Norwegian industrial history at the 'River Museum', located at Glomma on Nordre Øyeren. It is a national industrial museum and a very exciting and educational visit for the whole family. Visit different workshops, see the boats and taste the local delicacies sold at the pier, how about trying a goat cake?

At one time around 800 people worked in the industry on the site, and it is their story that is retold in the museum.

Christmas market in Oslo

Take the ferry to Oslo at Christmas time, when the city is decorated with Christmas lights and the shops are bursting with gift ideas. On the first weekend of Advent, Oslo's streets and fir trees are lit up and the Christmas month is marked by Christmas concerts and markets. If you don't want to do all your Christmas shopping in the shops, visit one of Oslo's cosy Christmas markets, where you can buy gifts and treats and sample traditional Norwegian food and drink.

One of the city's larger Christmas markets is at Youngsstorget, and you can also head to Sandvika, where the traditional Christmas market is decorated for Christmas every year. For a different Christmas experience, visit the Designers' Christmas Market at Grünerløkka and outside the Blue Jazz Club.

At Karl Johans Gate in Spikersuppa you can visit the Christmas market; Christmas in Winterland. Christmas delicacies are sold from the stalls and the whole family can have fun together and get into the right Christmas spirit.

Christmas in Winterland is located right next to the Spikersuppa ice rink, where both young and old can get on it smoothly. Pack your skates in your suitcase and spend a romantic evening at Spikersuppa Ice Rink in the centre of Oslo. The ice rink is open every day during the winter season from late November to early March and is free to use. If you don't have your own skates, you can rent them from the pavilion next to the rink.
