Brasserie Fengselet

Find a cheap self-drive holiday with Risskov and go on a family holiday to Norway and experience Brasserie Fengselet, or Brasseriet Fængslet, which today provides premises for skilled chefs and delighted guests. Hønefoss

Today, Hønefoss has a population of just over 15,000 and is located about 6 Norwegian miles northwest of Oslo. The town used to be a central hub on the East Coast and it is also easy to take a detour to Oslo or to visit the surrounding sights.

It is from the roaring waterfall that Hønefoss gets its name, which also forms a natural midpoint between the Sørsiden and the Nordsiden. Also visit the old Knights' Manor, which dates back to the 18th century and has a very beautiful location in Hønefoss.

There are several good places to eat in Hønefoss, try the restaurant in the former prison, Brasserie Fengselet, or the Restaurant Boat, which is open all year round. Hønefoss is certainly a worthy candidate for this year's winter holiday, summer holiday or perhaps just a long weekend break in Norway.

MS Dronning Tyra

From 1 May to 31 October you can visit the restaurant boat, MS Dronning Tyra. The boat is located in Hønefoss and sails up and down the Storelva and stops at Glatved Brygge. Riddergården

Riddergården is an old farmhouse from the 1700s located just outside Hønefossen in Hønefoss. It is a so-called city farm, which is known by the fact that some of the buildings are placed around a natural centre so that a kind of alley is formed between the buildings.

About 200 years ago, the farm was the residence of the Ridder family, and today guided tours are organised in the summer, and when Christmas approaches, a cosy Christmas market is held. Get to know the Ridder family and experience a genuine 18th-century Norwegian farmhouse.

Gjermundbu

Gjermundbu comes from the name Geirmarabú, which was the name of a former manor located in Ringerrike and which dates back to the 16th century. But it was also here in Gjermundbufu that a farmer suddenly discovered an old burial mound in 1943. The grave in Gjermundbuu would turn out to be the final resting place of an influential and powerful chieftain, as it is one of the most valuable finds from the Norwegian Viking Age. Among the weapons found were axes, swords and spears, and the site bears witness to arguably one of the most important moments in Norwegian history, from a global historical and cultural context.

Veien Cultural Park

Take a trip back in time and discover one of the largest burial sites in the East from the Early Iron Age. Just north of Hønefoss is Ringerrike, which has been a gathering place for people dating back to around 900 BC.

The museum exhibits objects found during the excavations in Veien and the visit can end in the shop or café, which also serves hot dishes and cakes in summer.

Ringkollen in Krokskogen

A popular destination for hikers and cyclists is Ringkollen in Krokskogen, and that's understandable. It's a wonderful area, covered in forest and with marked hiking and cycling routes, and in winter there is a choice of different ski slopes or tracks, there is also a ski stadium, an alpine facility, a ski jump and a ski slope with lights. Hot drinks can be ordered in the Ringkollstuen while the kids can play in the Legeland, which is just opposite the pub.

Krokskogen was located on the road between Oslo and Ringerike, which was quite busy in those days, and therefore there were a lot of good hiking stories, and there have been told wildly and widely about the many trolls and witches who live in the area. Parts of the trail follow the same route as the Bergenske Kongevej.

Hadeland Glassworks

In 1762 started what would become Norway's oldest industry, Hadeland Glassverk, and which today is one of the absolute main attractions in the whole Ringerike. In the bustling centre of Hadeland Glassverk, visitors will find Glasshytta, where they can meet the incredible artistic glassblowers and follow the magical process up close, from glass mass to sandblasting and colouring of the glass.

But Hadeland Glassvek is more than just glass in different shapes. If you've brought the kids along for the ride, there are two playgrounds for them to run wild in and a kid-friendly bakery serving up really good buns. Sandwiches or dinner can be ordered at the Kokkestua restaurant, or visitors can enjoy a coffee and cake at the aptly named Norgesglasshuset café.

Hadeland Glassverk is located in a very beautiful place and there are many activities and experiences waiting for the visitors, besides the glassblowers, the shops and the rich choice of dining options. For example, visit the Chief's Hall, where you can buy local Norwegian products such as honey, jams, mustards, soups, chocolates and caramels and much, much more. Hadeland Glassverk is simply a great place to take the little ones on a family holiday or perhaps just a weekend break with lots of shopping and experiences!
