Drammen

The industrial city of Drammen once had a somewhat shabby reputation, and that 'it's better to have a dram an hour than an hour in Drammen'. But in recent years, the town has undergone an incredible transformation, from a worn-out little town to something of a gem, of which the townspeople are also very proud.

Asphalt and concrete have been replaced with polished tiles made of granite from the region. The centre has been given a makeover and there is now a vibrant street life with cosy forecourt restaurants where you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat.

Take the walk up to Bragernesåsen and on to Spiraltoppen, where there is a fantastic panoramic view of the city, and it is also the most visited attraction in Drammen.

Drammensbadet is Norway's largest bathing facility, and there are both indoor and outdoor pools, with and without waves, there are also climbing walls, slides, and in general Drammensbadet is a true Eldorado for all those who like to have fun in the water.

Oslofjordmuseet

At the Oslofjord Museum outside Oslo you can experience boat collections, changing exhibitions and activities related to the leisure use of the Oslofjord. Enjoy a bit of rowing in the simulator, build model boats and test them in the teaching pool. Learn about bathing history and water purification of the fjord. There is also a café for coffee lovers as well as a museum shop.

Bærum

Risskov has a large selection of weekend breaks and cheap holidays to Norway. A sought-after destination is Asker and Bærum, located west of Oslo and characterized by rural surroundings with beautiful farms located right on the Oslofjord. Here you have the perfect opportunity to take a walk around the farm or enjoy a stroll in the fields. You can also go for a swim if the kids are along for the ride and would like to pay a visit to Vollen beach, which would be ideal on a warm sunny day. This is also where the locals seek refuge when the weather gets too hot. That's why there are a number of good bathing spots and a boat service to Oslo in the summer months. The harbour has moorings and a guest harbour with several shops and a fjord tavern.

In Vollen you can rent electric bikes, ask where the best cycling routes are, they know all about it at the rental office. That way you can mix a bit of active holiday into your car holiday.

Should the city become too much, a trip to Bærums verk, where there are about 50 shops that have not changed much since the 1600s, and it is of course also possible to get something to eat in Bærums verk. Also visit Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter, which is an experience for anyone who is just a little interested in art. The art centre opened in 1967 and was inaugurated by the figure skater Sonja Henie, who promised that The Beatles would come and play, which never happened. Since then, many famous artists have exhibited their work at the art centre, including Yayoi Kusama, who exhibited in 2016. At Henie-Onstad Art Centre you can also enjoy some lunch or dinner at the restaurant Bølgen & Moi Høvikodden, which offers international cuisine.

Henie-Onstad Art Centre

Henie Onstad Art Centre is a lively museum where something is always going on. Since it opened in 1961, it has made a name for itself, first by catering to art enthusiasts, and second by hosting a number of interesting exhibitions featuring artists such as Yayoi Kusama.

There is also a restaurant at the Henie-Onstad Art Centre, where you can order a large dinner or a simple lunch. Restaurant Wave & Moi Høvikodden serves international à la carte menus in beautiful surroundings. Stop by this lovely place when you are on a summer holiday or weekend break in the area.

Fishing trip - Tyrifjorden

Fishing is good in Hønefoss, so it might be a good idea to pack your fishing rod from home and go on a nice trip to Tyrifjorden, where trout and perch are plentiful. No fishing licence or permit is required from the Norwegian authorities, so a spontaneous fishing trip is perfectly fine.

Otherwise, enjoy a walk along the fjord, where the story goes that Olav the Holy built a church at Tyrifjorden, so why not take the trip and find out if the story is true?

Lågdals Museum

Find family-friendly travel to Norway and explore the beautiful scenery and exciting small towns on your own. For example, visit the Lågdals Museum in Kongsberg, which is open all year round and is a cultural history museum covering Kongsberg, Qu and Numedal. The museum was founded in 1924 and is located on the old Glitre farm Løkke, only about five minutes walk from the centre. During the summer season, several different breeds of animals graze in the fields and Norgen's only and therefore best preserved tower barn also graces the museum grounds.

Twinklegård is Bergstadens best preserved office building, made of stone, and then there is the small charming Kongsberggade, which still looks like when Bergman lived, including a well-stocked grocery store. Numedalstuna has several rooms painted in pink and there is also a meeting hall where three generations of Røysland lords exercised and consolidated their power in Uvdal in the 1700s.

The main building houses a 'Small Gallery' and various exhibitions, including folk art and Rolf Hansen's exhibition 'Ceramics for Joy'. There are also workshops for several of the town's artisans as well as Norway's only Eyewear and Optics Museum.

Vigelandsparken

Vigelandsparken in Oslo is definitely worth a visit, as it is also the largest park in the centre of Oslo. The park has always been a popular area where the city's citizens could entertain themselves with various outdoor activities or just enjoying the good weather surrounded by green and beautiful nature. The park is one of the most magnificent sights in the Norwegian capital and the whole park is also dedicated to the works of the famous sculptor and artist Gustav Vigeland. Vigeland Park contains a total of 214 sculptures, made of bronze and granite. There are also 13 wrought iron gates. Gustav Vigeland himself modelled all the sculptures in full size, while the carving in granite and the casting in bronze were mainly done by his students and skilled craftsmen.

Norwegian Folk Museum

In Bygdøy, close to Oslo, is the Norwegian Folk Museum which can be quite an interesting visit. Get a taste of how people lived in Norway from the 16th century to the present day.

The museum lays the foundations for an open-air museum with 158 buildings from various towns and villages in Norway. Visit ´Landsbygda´, ´Gamlebyen´, ´Setesdal in 1739´, ´Trøndelag in 1959´, ´Wessels gate in Oslo in 1879´ and ´Stavkirken från Gol´, but there are many more interesting buildings, which among other things also house a number of exhibitions on families and on Norwegian folk art from the Middle Ages to the 1900s and Sami culture.

Viking Ship Museum

Take a self-drive holiday to Norway and visit the Norwegian capital Oslo with Risskov. Find child-friendly hotels for the trip and get away with the whole family. One of the major attractions in Oslo is the Viking Ship Museum, located alongside Fram Museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum. The Viking ships were built around the year 800 and there are also three large burial mounds at Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune. The Viking Ship Museum also exhibits the only chariot ever found from the Viking Age, as well as sledges and carved wood art and other burial treasures. The museum also has skeletons from Oseberg and Gokstad. Plan a summer or winter holiday with Risskov and visit the Viking Ship Museum.

Silver Mines

Try the train ride into the King's Silver Mine, a thrilling ride 342 metres below the surface and 2,300 metres inside the mountain itself. The train stops here and the rest is on foot, taking visitors 1070 metres underground, or 560 metres below sea level. Remember to wear something warm, it's only about +6 degrees inside the mine itself. The train ride takes a total of 25 minutes and can seem a bit noisy. Therefore it might be a good idea to bring some earplugs.

The tour into and down the mine is not suitable for disabled or physically impaired visitors and the absolute minimum age limit is 3 years. The walk takes about 65 minutes and covers 800 metres. The tour also involves some stairs and the trip up and down is equivalent to about 5 floors.

It may be a good idea to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour. Meet at Malmveien 11, Saggrenda, 8 km from Kongsberg centre towards Notodden.

Restaurant Lorry

Lorry is a much-loved institution located at Parkveien 13, just behind the Royal Palace in Oslo. Open since the 1870s, it has been a meeting place for artists and night owls, as well as one of Oslo's cosiest and most traditional pubs. It serves traditional lunch and dinner dishes. Try reindeer dumplings and sheep-in-cabbage, but European classics like onion soup and British fish and chips have also found their way onto the menu. At Restaurant Lorry, it's always possible to grab a late-night snack or a lovely breakfast, if that's preferred.

Akershus Castle and Fortress

You can also visit Akershus Castle and Fortress. The fortress is strategically located at the entrance to Oslo Harbour and has survived several sieges over the years. The fortress dates back to the Middle Ages, but was rebuilt by Christian IV, and Queen Margrethe I lived in the castle for the first part of her life. In the castle you can see the eerie dungeon, which was also used as a prison during the Second World War.

Karl Johans Gate

Find a last minute hotel at Risskov and take a wonderful trip to Norway's capital, Oslo. Karl Johans Gate is Oslo's main street and stretches from Jernbanetorget at Oslo Sentralstasjon to the Royal Palace at the other end. Along the street you will find a myriad of restaurants, cafés and shops. But you'll also come across several interesting historic buildings along the way, such as Oslo Cathedral and the Storting, Norway's answer to the Parliament. Spend time at the Royal Palace and stroll through the palace gardens. Find a cheap weekend break for the whole family at Risskov and discover the lovely city on your own.

Oslo

Oslo, the capital of Norway, is a lovely city, perfect for a city break, it is still growing and today houses around 700,000 inhabitants.

There are exciting museums, art exhibitions and restaurants, and plenty of space to enjoy the wonderful and lively atmosphere of this small 'big' capital. Oslo is also a versatile city, and there is always something to see or do in the various districts. It is also not far between interesting sights, all within walking distance or easily accessible by bike or public transport. Oslo is a very bike-friendly city, and it certainly pays to rent a bike and experience the city up close. You might want to start by visiting the 700-year-old fortress, Akershus, which sits on a hill with incredible views. Then take the trip to Oslo's Opera House, which also faces the fjord, just on the other side. Discover Vigelandsparken and Karl Johans Gate, where you'll find a myriad of restaurants and cafés.

Oslo is also a city full of music, and there is a lot of live music playing around the various clubs and pubs.

The small metropolis has its charm in winter as well as in summer, and there are always good surprises waiting in Oslo.

Opera House

The Oslo Opera House has recently become one of Norway's national landmarks. The building was completed in 2007 with a budget of NOK 4.4 trillion. The building belongs to the National Theatre and Opera and is the largest national cultural building built in Norway since the 1300s. Take a walk up to the roof of the building and enjoy the beautiful view over the city and the water.
